Responding to chapter 5 part 3 through chapter 9

Imagine you are an Alpha Plus student from Gloucester, Massachusetts, North America, World State who has spent several days observing rituals and daily life in Malpais, New Mexico in the year 632 A.F. In your travels there you have met John, Linda, Pope, Mitsima, as well as Bernard and Lenina from London.

Write a blog comment to classmates who are training to do the same job as you. Be sure to describe rituals and daily life. (In other words refer to details from the book.) What values and beliefs can be inferred from the rituals and life there? (Strong responses will compare these to rituals and daily life in the World State.) Be specific. You must quote a Malpais inhabitant at least once. Strong responses will talk about your encounters with and/or observations of some of the characters who appear in these chapters. Be sure to also include personal feelings and ideas about life in Malpais. (You'll need to decide if you're an orthodox or unorthodox Alpha.)

In your response include at least five vocabulary words. WRITE THE VOCABULARY WORDS IN ALL CAPITALS.

Post your response in the comment box below before class on Friday, March 8. (Responses need to be at least 300 words.)

    Dear Classmates,

It is currently the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, of course), and my studies have taken me from my hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts to Malpais, New Mexico. I have spent the past several days observing daily life in Malpais as well as interacting with a few folks who live on this reservation; John, Linda, Pope, Mitsima and two visitors from London; Bernard and Lenina. The way they go about their lives is a completely different idea than I am used to. I am still trying to decide what I think of it. One part of me thinks they are all insane and unstable; but the other part of me is drawn towards it. The people are so free to do what they would like, but that freedom can sometimes lead to unhappiness. I am perfectly content with my structured life; and I love knowing that happiness will inevitably come to me, since I am a resident of the World State. When looking at this reservation, I feel so CALLOW. I’ve never seen anything of this sort before. The INCANDESCENT light makes the place look beautiful; but when the sun goes in, it is very ominous.
The way new children are born is a frightening thing here in Malpais. Women go through a painful process before, during, and after the child is born. It takes so long, and the outcome is just one single human. It seems so inefficient to produce new beings in this way. I don’t even want to think about the decaying process that I observed. When one passes, there is such an awful stench. And then the body is painful to look at, as it is pale and literally lifeless. Lenina seems to be very disturbed by this process of decay; even more disturbed than I am! They speak some language that I am not even sure is a true language. The only one I can speak English with is John and his mother Linda. Linda has a BLITHE spirit, which makes her pleasant. This place is mind-blowing. There are not only appalling ways that birth and death take place; but there are other aspects of their life as well that I have never encountered. To start; there is no CONDITIONING. They learn things as they get older, and nothing is forced upon them. They have a thing known as “marriage”. In this thing, one devotes himself to one single person; and it is wrong to devote himself to more than one! They also have religion, disease, and amazing animals that run free. This FACADE of craziness is sort of undermined by the amount of freedom they have. It makes me wonder what life would be like for me, if I had control over all aspects of my own life. Hearing John quote his favorite novel “How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't,” makes me wonder what my favorite novel would be if I were allowed to read what I wished. Would I be a fan of romance or mystery? Maybe both!
The reservation is a very different place. There is no one person controlling everybody’s actions, they are free to think for themselves. Personally, the structure and guaranteed happiness I am used to is a safer and more stable society. Afterall, Community, Identity, and Stability are key to a successful society.

    Sincerely,
    Kelly Foster

  2. These savages are quite experience. The air is PUTRID and untreated with synthetic scents. They don’t speak to me often, and I am here only as an observer. How ECCENTRICit is that they wear such little clothing and speak such a useless language. It’s no wonder why these people were thought not important enough to bother civilizing. Imagine, having a m—and father! There are children suckling at women’s breasts, how indecent… Thank goodness we have bottles for the children at the Central Gloucester Hatchery and Conditioning Center.
The most favorable experience I’ve had yet is running into another Alpha Plus from London. He seemed quite peculiar, in that he saw the breast suckling as a beautiful experience, and continually speak of the rituals in which they partake. Bernard Marx and the woman accompanying him, Lenina, talked to me often about what they believe the savages are doing. Lenina was quite agitated by the sight of boys being whipped- and how willing and STOIC they were in doing so! All over something as silly as rain. Everybody knows that there is no human intervention involved in weather patterns, yet they whole heartedly believed in this. Perhaps it is a form of CONDITIONING, in that they must complete this task to be exalted in their society, or now they are desensitized to violence, unlike poor Lenina.
They PERSECUTE one of their own though. He doesn’t look like them, but he speaks and talks like them. His m--- is Linda, someone who was left by the World State, and she did her best to teach him of our world and the teachings, and the right way to live. But the poor boy has been tainted too much by this society. He doesn’t belong anywhere. In the World State, everyone belongs to everyone. There is no outcasting or ESTRANGEment so long as you follow the rules. He follows them, yet is still outted.

The place was odd, to say the least. The cemented blocks towered, one on top of the other. People (if I can use such a word to describe such undignified creatures) wandered out of the blocks. I realized then with curiosity and a hint of horror that they lived inside of these blocks. They were all exiting these buildings in order to gather outside. I found myself getting swept up in this group and followed the stampede to their destination. Now that I was in such close proximity, I was aware of just how abominable these creatures were. They were an insult to all the senses; they both smelled and looked PUTRID, and my instinct was to cover my nose. Throughout this ordeal, however, I forced myself to remain STOIC. I knew that I was far more civilized than these people and I would not let on just how repulsive I found them to be. I craned my neck in order to see where the crowd was headed, and, a few feet away, I caught sight of two heads, far cleaner and better kept than the rest. I pushed my way through the dense crowd and made my way over to the pair. I introduced myself to the man and woman, who were clearly the only other civilized people in the crowd. They were looking in horror as a wrinkled, shriveled old man limped past. We chatter for a bit about the newest games, such as Centrifugal Bumble Puppy, before a ceremony towards the middle of the crowd began. A young boy in the center was walking over what looked to be snakes, before being whipped. I turned to the pair to share just how ABJECT I thought this display to be, but they had disappeared into the crowd. I turned around to look for them again, but instead caught sight of a young man. Although he clearly stood out from the rest of the crowd, he was not civilized like the other two had been. He was dressed in Indian attire, but when he spoke to me, he spoke in very good English.
“Hullo,” he said. He sounded much different from anyone at the Reservation—from anyone I’d ever met before, in fact.
“Young man,” I said to him, unsure of exactly how to address him. “Do you live here?”
He nodded. “Indeed, with Linda.” He pointed towards a horribly disfigured woman, standing at the edge of the crowd. I couldn’t bear to look at her for long; the sight was too repulsive.
“Linda’s told me about civilized people like you,” he said. “About the exciting places you get to go. I’d really love to see it for myself someday.”
I purposefully ignored the hint, and hurriedly said my good-byes. I pushed my way out of the crowd, taking care to keep as much distance as possible between me and these uncivilized creatures. Once out, I relished in my SOLITUDE. I was anxious to get away from these savage, UNORTHODOX people and back to civility and normality.

I was admittedly quite nervous to observe life in the Malpais Savage Reservation. After all, those who have never been CONDITIONED must be unruly and uncivilized. Once in the reservation I soon discovered that the savages wanted nothing of me. Most hardly even acknowledged my presence. I was relieved, yet there is a strange sense of SOLITUDE that occurs when one is alone in a crowd, even if it is a crowd of savages.
Of course I had come expecting the worst, but this was terrible. All around me was age and sickness and the feeling of death. There were families walking through the streets together: committed fathers, VIVIPAROUS mothers, and their children. No one else seemed repulsed by this sight. I may have muttered something to the effect of “How can you live like this?” to which a wrinkly man replied, “It is tradition.”
Shortly after my arrival I noticed a large group of people gathering in what seemed to be a town square. I accidentally bumped into two people who were also visiting Malpais, named Bernard and Lenina. Lenina looked as horrified as I felt at the sights, sounds, and smells of the reservation. If I had more soma I would have given her some. The poor girl had left hers behind. Bernard and Lenina were Alphas from London, Western Europe. It was wonderful to see civilized faces, but I soon lost them in the crowd.
The savages began to sing and play instruments. It was almost like a primitive form of a Solidarity Service, though much more ECCENTRIC. There was a sort of performance involving snakes, dancing, and a boy being whipped. The whole thing was completely nonsensical and it made me feel frightened. If only I had brought more soma with me, I could have escaped the ABJECT horrors that had unfolded before my eyes that day.

I arrived alone in my SOLITUDE at Malpais. Not quite so sure of what to expect. The pilot assured me, “they’re perfectly tame; savages won’t do you any harm. They’ve got enough experiences of gas bombs to know that they mustn’t play any tricks.” Was it a warning or a relief? I don’t know. As I continued to walk, I could immediately detect the ECCENTRIC lifestyle of these uncivilized savages. Could I consider it a lifestyle, of course not, who would live in a life full of waste, disease, PUTRID animals, death, and ABJECTION. Each individual step made me shiver; I hated it. I held my notebook up close to my chest. I saw a man; indeed it was an old man, an Indian full of wrinkles, who had such a foul stench. Yes, I know what old age is; yet not even the Director at the World State has shown any horrific changes as the savage. It may be my CALLOW views, although this is was not normal. Fortunately, I encountered two CONDITIONED individuals named Bernard and Lenina. They were as bewildered as I was. We saw a large crowd from a distance and we walked toward it slowly. On our way there, we saw a woman-giving breast to a baby, what a VIVAPROUS sight! To think of the experience of childbirth and the agony made me sick. Especially, when there are modern new and faster forms of creating these “babies” by the thousands back at the Hatchery. I turned my head away and I felt the ground beneath me thump as I walked. The sounds of screams, pounds, and music were boisterous. I could not believe my eyes. A boy was getting whipped. I bumped into a man. He was white and blue eyed. He introduced himself as John. He explained to us that the boy was a sacrifice. However, he was sure enough that he would have allowed himself to be whipped many times and they would have most likely received more blood from him. It was all intended for corn and rain. John explained to us that his mother was Linda. She had suffered a lot at the reservation. Linda was so happy to see us; she shared the same desire for soma as we did. I could not imagine myself without my soma at all for so many years, I would have probably gone mad. A woman beside me had some sort of skin disease. I tried to keep away and utterly stared. John and Linda talked to us, I could not hear a single word, and my eyes were looking all around. I could not take it any longer.

  6. Dear fellow workers
It is quite disgusting, these people are quite disgusting. We should be so happy for our BLITHE civilization. During my time in the Malpais I watch the savages that live there and have seen how they live. This place is so uncivilized, and look. Look at this cut! I have to make sure it is ASEPTIC, and won't get infected. These people whipped a child and he had to be STOIC just so it would rain this isn't true because Ford's will makes it rain or not. I saw so many people here that act like animals. This couple was walking around as well as me. They were lost, well I think they were. The two of them were from real society and they looked confused. They were being followed by a mother. Yes mother. And what looked to be her son, absolutely atrocious. The mother was ABJECT. Gnarled and old, ugh. She wore this putrid cloak, so many holes, and some of them were mended. These people are so UNORTHODOX. Through my studies of their behaviors leads me to think that this backwards world has no clue about what civilizations norms are really supposed to be. These inferiors don't share themselves only one person can have them which is insane. Completely insane. Of all of these things we must stop and think why they do all these things. They fight, they argue and hurt each other, where as we are united and we have soma. I think that if soma was introduced here that these people might become civilized. This saying they do have things like it but with disadvantages unlike soma. I advise that we try this but we try it with only a few, and we proceed cautiously before we start this on a greater scale. These people would never be able to become high in our nations. Not even as high as an Epsilon minus but then they can be part so we can get rid of the savagery of this society.

The savage reservation of Malpais, New Mexico is an extremely queer place. When I arrived I had to wait for the warden of the reservation to sign my passage through the deadly electric fence surround the reservation. While he was signing me in he gave me warnings about the reservation along with some facts about its layout. He told us that the savages on this reservation still give birth to their children, what an ABJECT thought. I then had to get onto a plane to be flown into the reservation, the first thing I saw when I stepped out was the pueblos in which these people lived, when I got closer I started to see people, who were mostly disgusting to look at and had a PUTRID stench around them. Everywhere people were hand washing their clothes or sewing them. I was confused, why waste you time with old clothes, why not just get new ones? There was one rather attractive savage who seemed to be ESTRANGED from the rest of the group. Suddenly group of men started chanting, singing, dancing, and playing drums. At first it wasn't so bad, but as it went on it got more and more of an eerie feeling to it. They then flung snakes into a pit and someone dumped corn meal onto them, why I will never know. Soon young man began walking in circles through the snakes , and a man came out with a whip. The older man began to whip the young one who kept his a STOIC expression on his face. I noticed a couple across the horrid scene who seemed to be from civilization and felt relief that there was normal people here. The lady had a PALLID complexion and seemed to have the same aversion to the scene in front of us that I did. When the boy finally collapsed from the pain and the crowd dispersed I started to make my way over the the couple and saw them speaking to the attractive savage from earlier. I listened from a distance because I didn’t want to interrupt their conversation, but I wanted to know what reason they would possibly have to talk to this creature. The first words I caught were the lady saying, “Do you mean to say that you wanted to be hit with that whip?” (pg 117) and then the savage replying with, “For the sake of the pueblo-to make the rain come and the corn to grow....” He then went on the say that it proved that he was a man. What a ridiculous thing to say, how would letting oneself be harmed prove that you are a man it is just foolish. The savage said he would be right back and walked away for a moment and I took the chance to go over and introduce my self to the couple. I said, “Hello my name is Josephine Stalin, I’m from Gloucester, Massachusetts, North America, World State and I am so glad to see someone who is sane in this Ford-forsaken place.” I soon found out that their names were Bernard and Lenina and that they were from London. Soon the savage man came back and told me his name was John, he was taking Bernard and Lenina deeper into the reservation and asked if I would like to join. I declined, I didn’t think I could stay in that dreadful place much longer even if there were other normal people around. I just wanted to take an extra large dose of soma and go back to where I was staying, I would be leaving the next day. And if that place was making me unhappy I really shouldn’t be there, so I did exactly that, went back to where I belonged. I certainly didn’t belong in the gruesome place.

  8. Dear Classmates,

I have been traveling throughout Malpais, New Mexico for several weeks now. All is much different than back home where you all live the usual life, feeling comfortable and safe. I have met many people in my travels, all very strange and even quite frightening. At times I don’t know what to think about everything I am seeing. It is all wrong and disgusting. I am repulsed.
I have met a savage boy named John, who although he grew up on the reservation, is very different. He is an outcast, ESTRANGED. John often spends his time in SOLITUDE. His mother was originally from the World State in London, but when a trip went bad she ended up stranded on the reservation. Although she most likely could have journeyed back she was frightened for she birthed a child; horrifying, I know. She would be an IGNOMINY of the World State if she ever chose to return. Along with John and Linda I have met many other people as well. I have met two very kind people from the World State in London named Bernard and Lenina. Both seem to be just as shocked about the reservation life as me, though the PNEUMATIC Lenina much more. She can barely handle the things she has seen and has chosen to go on a soma-holiday for most of her stay.
Life on the reservation is much different than the life you are used to. They live savagely. They are not CONDITIONED and PREDESTINED as we are in the World State. They have significant others that they stay with for extended periods of time, it is unthinkable. They also still follow the practice of “birth”. I do not know what possesses these people to act and behave as they do. Many are not even aware of how life should be lived, how we live it, in the World State. But their whole lives it has been all they have known, they do not know our way of life. “As far back as I can remember” John said when everyone was discussing the reservation and its odd rituals and traditions.
Visiting the savage reservation has made me thoroughly miss everyone from the Gloucester, Massachusetts, North America, World State. I am counting down the minutes until I come home.
    See you all very soon,

  9. Day 1, Malpais: Savage Reservation

After spending time in Malpais observing the creatures who thrive there, my confidence in the World State has never been greater. Their strange behaviors and beliefs baffle and frighten me. It makes me wonder whether they are truly happy or not.
Upon arrival, I immediately noted the unsanitary conditions of the reservation. Malpais was not, by any means, ASEPTIC. I yearned for the neatness of my town. Refuse was scattered everywhere, and no one seemed to be attempting to rid of it. The Warden introduced me to the area. He explained that I shouldn’t feel endangered here because the savages were not dangerous to civilized people. He then called over a strange looking man who had much difficulty walking. I have never viewed the effects of old age before, so this was a shock to me. He introduced himself to me as Mitsima, and said he was one of the elders of Malpais. He spoke English, which was surprising. He slowly led me to a small hut which I assumed I was staying in. I wondered why Mitsima, an individual of high status in Malpais was in charge of doing a Delta level task. I would never lower myself to doing such Epsilon work. I would think the man was kind but I couldn’t get past his physical appearance. He had little to no hair, and his face was nothing but wrinkles and unsightly spots. His back hunched in the most grotesque way. Before leaving, he smiled at me. His mouth contained no teeth. It ruined the otherwise welcoming gesture. A smile here was not as nice as a smile in the World State.
The next day, I decided to do some fieldwork and observe the people during their daily lives. All of the savages wore next to nothing. Their bodies and dark skin were exposed to the harsh sun. This was rather strange to me. Normally, people expose themselves to be promiscuous. None of these people had the intent to be. What clothes they did have on were ragged. They appeared old, worn, and patched. If my clothes tear or become dirty, I simply throw them out and purchase new clothing. They walked silently to and fro, carrying clay pots, baskets of vegetables, or even dead animals. They all seemed to be preparing for something. In the center of Malpais, there was a sort of gathering place. Indians were beating INDEFATIGABLY on drums in a rhythmic fashion and crying out strange sounds. Walking around, I noticed a couple of people that appeared to be from the World State as well. Their skin was light, and they wore normal clothes. I approached them and asked them if they were here to observe as well. We exchanged polite conversation, but were interrupted by an outburst from the male Indians beating the drums.
The Indians then performed the most disturbing and ECCENTRIC ritual I’ve ever witnessed. Torches placed in a circle were INCANDESCENT in the sunset, casting shadows on the Indian’s painted faces. A young boy walked around and around a collection of snakes and was whipped multiple times while he walked. Lenina, the World State woman I met previously, was sobbing uncontrollably. I could understand why. The amount of blood on the ground was enough to make anyone sick. “Oh, I wish I had my soma,” she said. I wished I had my soma too. Unfortunately, I had left it in the room where I was staying. After the ritual, I met a young man who appeared to be from the World State, but acted like a savage. “Why wouldn’t they let me be the sacrifice? I’d have gone round ten – twelve, fifteen. Palowhitwa only got as far as seven. They could have had twice as much blood from me. The multitudinous seas incarnadine,” he said. I asked him his name, and he told us his name was John. Lenina questioned why he would ever want to be hit with a whip. He replied, saying he would do it for the rest of the pueblo, and to show his strength.

    1. Before I went to bed that night, I stayed up and pondered about this man and his desires. It was odd enough that he was pale with blue eyes, the exact opposite of the rest of the savages. What confused me more was his talk of sacrifice. I didn’t understand how being hit with a whip could make others feel happy, or grow their food. Why was it a good thing to tolerate pain? If these people wanted to be happy, they could simply take soma like the rest of us. They could find entertainment at the feelies, or just enjoy each other. Why don’t they belong to each other? It seems wrong and restricted. There is no need for “sacrifice” in the World State. No one needs to suffer for the sake of others. We thrive because everyone has their place, does their job, and things work marvelously. But then I started to think, are there sacrifices that people of the World State must take in order for it to be how it is? Do people give up anything to be happy? What about those whose lives are PREDESTINATION for Epsilon work? Could they do something more if they weren’t made the way they were? Thankfully, I caught myself before my head wandered too far. I disliked the puzzlement, and began to feel discomfort in the form of a headache. I scolded myself for ever thinking about such things, and vowed to never let them cross my mind again. I promptly took enough soma, and fell asleep.

    Dear classmates,

Malpais, is interesting, to say the least. It’s ECCENTRIC, and the people here are intriguing. I know one might think it’s UNORTHODOX, to think that a place where the community sacrifices and ABJECT looking people roam about, but to be honest, it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would.

I feel almost CALLOW here, as I stand with the two people I’ve met from London who are much like us, Lenina and Bernard; we watch the society of savages go on, not really knowing what to expect from the lot of them. The three of us, Lenina, Bernard, and I, met this old woman – yes, old – the other day. Her name is Linda, and she has a… son, named John. I don’t expect Lenina likes Linda very much, because she’ll look at her like she’s a disgusting piece of nothing. I’m not postitive, but I don’t think it’s nice; I guess we’re just not used to the fact that people start to look like that when they get older. The thought is almost frightening.

It’s strange to think that people aren’t assigned here and can use certain words that I still find a bit HERETICAL. What I also found odd was that when we first arrived here in Malpais, a sacrifice was occurring. Afterward, the man named John told Lenina and Bernard, “I ought to have been there. Why wouldn’t they let me be the sacrifice?” It’s quite unbelievable to me that he would even think about wanting to go through something like that. Why would he want to do that? Lenina found it disturbing, and kept asking for soma; Bernard didn’t say much until later. I was actually quite intrigued by the fact that someone has so much emotion. I know what you’re thinking. What is wrong with me? Why do I find another way of life, a life so full of the unknown, so fascinating, but I just can’t help being curious about all of it.

It is day two and I still can’t comprehend the acts of these people. Malpais, New Mexico is not even comparable to the World State in Gloucester. I walk around the little town square and see these faces just stare at me. In my opinion the FACADE they put forward makes me more confused than ever. I bumped into a woman named Linda and she was the sort of relief I needed. Someone I could actually communicate with, since everyone else seemed to be speaking a different language. We got into conversation about how these people ESTRANGE newcomers and never really accept. That piece of information drew me in closer making me wonder why? Well apparently Linda and her son, John, weren’t very liked themselves. The two were sort of outcasts and were left in a state of SOLITUDE. Linda used to live in the World State, growing to think that sleeping around was okay. In the “uncivilized” world it’s not. She slept with a lot of women’s husbands and got beat for it. As she told me this story she expressed of how she was so confused, and I became confused as well. Ones in the World State would believe that those who don’t sleep around are an IGNOMINY, not a faithful human being. John began to speak and told me, “I did something that none of the others did: I stood against a rock in the middle of the day, in summer, with my arms out, like Jesus of the Cross.” The fact that he wanted to experience the pain and take a different outlook started to push me away. The scared look in my eyes connected with two others; Bernard and Lenina. They were also visiting from the World State. A conversation brew up between us three, and our facial expressions all became the same as we walked down the street. We discovered that death was an actual thing. The stench of dead bodies filled the air, and I became disgusted. My stomach turned and I felt like nothing I have experienced before. Lenina became terrified as we kept walking. Dirty looks, dead bodies, married couples, pain in the eyes of many, the screams of women giving birth, and children breastfeeding from their VIVIPAROUS mothers, all combined into an unforgettable experience. In the crowd of people I was lost from the company of Lenina and Bernard. I took a few steps around a corner and saw little children crying, and that was enough for me to go home. My trip was over. Happiness is better than having the experience of pain.

  12. Dear Classmates and Fellow Scholars,
This trip to the Savage Colony of Malpais has been exhilarating and has already made the year 632 A.F. for me! They are fascinating, although these ideas have made me feel UNORTHODOX. I climbed up a large mesa, reaching their “city,” a mass of pueblos where they reside. Needless to say, they are filthy and bordering on PUTRID but for the sake of science and curiosity, I got past it. They are so very different from us at the Gloucester Hatchery! The divergence begins at birth, for they are born to a VIVIPAROUS mother as opposed to decanted like we are in civilization. The whole idea makes one wonder the true vulgarity of the word mother. Not only that, not everyone belongs to everyone, the commit to relationships. I have met one woman who tries to exercise our way of life and the entire community excludes her as a LECHEROUS and horrible woman. She claims she’s a woman of our civilization yet she herself has a child that she has given birth to. They have ceremonies with music and reverence to their higher beings, much like out Solidarity Services and Community Sings. Maybe we aren’t so different after all? But then again, these ceremonies are brutal, involving whips and snakes, images of an eagle and a man on a cross… Such primitive things! What do the entail? These questions come up when laying in SOLITUDE, SUPINE in my bed, the elders made that clear that us from the “Other Place” aren’t welcome on the Colony. Although my loneliness ended quickly, a couple came over from London a couple days ago, the man is conducting some research as a scientist much like us and the woman is along for the experience.
I truly want to delve deeper into the way their society works. I want to learn what exactly they intend with these brutal ceremonies. I can’t let my mind wander like this; I’ll have to observe them further. Until next time, until next discovery!
    Sincerely,
    Zachary Schultz

  13. Dear Classmates,

Malpais, New Mexico is the home to ABJECT savages, the ones that I’ve heard horrible stories about back in the World State. You’d think by 632 A.F. that they would at least be civilized. I wish I were back in Gloucester, Massachusetts and had a larger supply of soma to help me through this vacation. At least I’m not here in SOLITUDE, or the only one who finds this place hard to cope with. I’ve met Linda, John, Pope, Mitsima, and Bernard and Lenina who are from London. Lenina and I seem to have similar reactions to the HERETICAL ways of life on this reservation. You would never believe the tired looking faces that roam the dirty streets, or the PUTRID stench that radiates off their decaying bodies. Dirt sinks into the wrinkles on their faces and hands, but a smile is still plastered onto their faces as if it were okay. Meanwhile, I’m fighting the urge to gag and choking down a few half-grammes of soma to numb myself of this experience.
I feel sorry for Linda. She puts up the FACADE that living in Malpais is okay, but really she misses her beta status and regrets ever giving birth, “Just think of it: me, a Beta – having a baby: put yourself in my place.” She doesn’t know the first thing about living with savages. Her CONDITIONING has been that effective, as it is on all of us. A family is something to gawk at, not something to have. Pregnancy is forbidden and unnatural, but here it is praised. It’s a backwards, cruel, and scary place to be. Though, I’m trying my best to understand this madness, but it’s hard to. I keep saying that cleanliness is closer to fordliness as I look upon the filth, and my understanding becomes blurry again. It’s no use. I want to go back home.

    Wish I Wasn’t Here,

  14. While the events I have just witnessed are almost too revolting to cement into our Ford's history by writing them down on paper, I feel the obligation to inform my educated associates of the horrors that exist outside of civilization. It is astounding that before Ford there existed a common system similar to the system of these savages. It is incredibly important that we ESTRANGE ourselves completely from these savages, continue our duties and never forget, above all, that a gramme is better than a damn.

A long-term friend, Lenina Crowne, informed me of an impulsive trip to the Malpais reservation in New Mexico she was planning on taking with her fellow co-worker Bernard Marx. Now, I have heard of Mr.Marx. He is supposedly an elitist, like us, but he is also a trouble maker. Not very attractive, always grumpy, never accepts a gramme from anyone. He is strongly HERETICAL towards the World State. Perhaps he brought Lenina to the reservation with him so that he could join the savages. Oh, what a terrible, ABJECT thought! As I was saying, after Lenina told me her plans, I decided to go to the reservation as well, for several reasons. It was purely educational, motivated by stupid curiosity. Also, I worried for Lenina's sake, being away with this strange man in an untamable land. I planned my trip at the same time that Lenina's was scheduled to keep an eye on her and Mr. Marx.

To get back to my point, Malpais was horrifying. The place was absolutely disgusting, not a speck of pure cleanliness anywhere. The minimal clothes, the rudimentary structures, and the savage's faces were coated in mud. There was also no soma to be seen! How can those people live without soma? How do they survive, I ask you, without the equivalent of oxygen. And this was only my very first impression. These people took part in a strange ceremony, unlike our Solidarity service or other normal practices. A single boy was chosen to be whipped in front of the crowd of savages who cheered at his torture. They were whipping him "For the sake of the pueblo--to make the rain come and the corn grow" according to one of them, John. What a foolish thought. Rain and corn do not come by way of superstition, only by chemical infusions in the laboratory.

    1. Just as suspected, Marx actually befriended the savages; man named John and his, his Linda, those two are apparently from the outside world. There is a very strange tale as to how they arrived on the reservation. A very scandalous and shocking story that, if I was so cruel as to tell you, would double remind us women to always properly use our contraception, so lucky that we are to have it. Anyway, John was a very strange man; a savage, nothing but one, and yet he attempted to speak like one of us, he attempted to use sophisticated grammar, but the meaning was lost and CALLOW as he attempted to converse about Shakespeare(?) and "working clay", a sort of trade he learned from Mitsima, another savage. Interesting, these pointless hobbies that the uncivilized are interested in and have so intricately designed. And John's Linda, well she was absolutely repulsive, words cannot describe the image that will forever be printed in my mind. Her emotions run wild, she expresses love for a "Tomakin" and she centers most of her attention on Pope. On one man! How could she possibly have once lived in the World State I could not say.

But of course, I do see it. While she is covered in grime, and has no control over her emotions, she was also.. pitiable. WRETCHED, unbelievably so, and so gone into the world of savages, but yet so in need of the World State. well it goes to show that our World State is perfect, who could want any other?

  15. Quite an ECCENTRIC place, the Malpais Reservation. So different from Gloucester, from the World State. When I first arrived the Warden tried to frighten me with tales of what to expect: marriage, families, Christianity, extinct languages, dangerous animals. Weaker men would have opted for a soma holiday, freedom from the horrors of this place. But I had a job to do; I had to study the people and their way of life. Couldn't exactly do my work if I was on a soma holiday.
I spent my first day simply wandering about the reservation as my guide went about his daily routine. I had to share a guide with two Londoners; a man and a woman. Bernard Marx was a fellow Alpha plus, though his height was that of one of the lower classes. His companion Lenina was a young Beta, I was certain she could not be three years older than I was.
We saw an old man. Not one who looked as eternal the World Leaders and the other members of the World State, one whose face was wrinkled and sagging. He was a sight to behold; something we three outsiders were CONDITIONED to find repulsive, yet at the same time none of us could take our eyes off him.
Later that day when we waited for our guide to receiving instructions we passed heaps of rotting rubbish. The PUTRID smell of the place made my nose burn, so unlike the ASEPTIC air of Gloucester. Unlike Lenina, I did not dare to hold my handkerchief over my nose. I saw the savages watching us out of the corner of my eye; I knew they were studying us just as I was supposed to be studying them. They refused to look us in the eye, but I knew they were watching.
It was strange, watching the VIVIPAROUS mothers give their breasts to their babies. Was that what I would have been like, what we all would have been like if we had not been DECANTED? I noticed Lenina looking almost horrified as she watched the scene, her face bright red. “What a wonderfully intimate relationship” I heard Bernard describe it as. Wonderful? I suppose he was right.
Before Lenina could voice her further distaste of the reservation, our guide returned and ushered us down the street. As we walked I caught sight of a woman picking lice out of a little girl’s hair. I shuddered at the mere thought of having bugs crawling on my scalp.

    1. He led us to one of the rooftops that overlooked the village square where a ceremony was taking place. I did not know whether it was to alienate us from it or to allow us to get a better view. To our surprise they began whipping a boy around my age. After the ritual a young man came up to us. He dressed like an Indian, but he looked just like any Alpha or Beta from the World State. He greeted us in faultless English, asking if we were civilized. He went on to lament about the sacrifice that had just taken place and how he had longed to the victim of that ritual. “For the sake of the pueblo- to make the rain come and the corn grow,” he told us the ritual was for, “And to please Pookong and Jesus. And then to show that I can bear pain without crying out. Yes, to show that I’m a man.” I was beginning to understand why the World State forbade religion. Truly barbaric, harming oneself to please “Pookong and Jesus” and to prove you are a man. He went on to explain how he and his mother, Linda, had come to be at the reservation. He told us that his mother had arrived at the reservation after injuring herself while on a hike and that his father’s name was Tomakin.
He brought us to meet his mother, Linda, who did used to live in the World State. She was far from her glory days, she reminded me of the old man we say earlier. She had run up to Linda begun to kiss her repeatedly, crying from the joy of seeing civilized people. As she began to talk endlessly to Lenina I noticed Bernard and John (that was the young man’s name) sneaking out of the room. Not wanting to alone with the two women, I swiftly followed them out.
From what John told me and Bernard, he and Linda were obviously not welcome here. The teachings Linda was taught hold no ground here. To be in such SOLITUDE, I pity them both. Bernard seems to as well, as he has invited them both to return with him and Lenina to Linda. John’s face lit up and he accepted almost immediately. “O brave new world,” he cried, “O brave new world that has such people in it.”
Brave new world? Was that really the world we live in? I don’t know if that’s true.

  16. The traditions of this old reservation are highly unusual. These people’s customs have proven to be even odder than I had originally expected. During my visit, I witnessed one of the savages’ ritualistic ceremonies. The event started with drumming and the playing of a flute and quickly escalated with the addition of loud metallic voices. Then, a group of masked people arose from two underground chambers. A PRODIGIOUS crowd danced around the two roofs of the chambers from which they had come, getting faster and faster with each revolution. It was terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time. These people’s actions were so strange and so, well, savage, but despite my valued civility, there was something inside me that desperately wanted to join them. However, this desire was soon staunched by what happened next. A man, who appeared to be the leader of the dance, went to a wooden chest and from it took two black snakes and threw them out into the crowd. He then produced two more and two more, until every participant in the ceremony was now dancing with a snake in hand. The festivities, which seemed to have resembled one of our solidarity services only moments ago, had turned into a brute display of the ABJECT side of savage life. All the people threw the snakes into a large pile in the middle of the square, and an old man raised his hands, to which they all responded in dead silence. It was early how quickly they had been hushed. From the same two hatches that the dancers had came, there now rose two images: one of a man seemingly nailed to a cross, and another of an eagle. The images puzzled me even more, but I continued to watch, a choice I regretted later. At that moment, a boy of about eighteen stepped out from the crowd. After the leader of the ceremony made some curious gestures, the boy began to walk slowly around the pile of writhing snakes. Suddenly, another man, with a mask of a coyote and holding a whip, stepped from the crowd. He proceeded to start to whip the young boy as he walked around the pile of snakes. The site was simply horrifying, and it was astounding to me that none of the bystanders made any attempt to help the youth. A woman next to me, who I had met earlier and who was visiting from London, shouted out “Oh, stop them, stop them!” But, the protests of this woman, Lenina, were the only ones to be heard. The boy never made a sound as he walked INDEFATIGABLY, and I had lost count of the lashes by the time he, at last, mercifully, fell down. Then, as quickly as it had ended, the music started up again, and, as if they had completely forgotten about the horrors they had just enacted, danced out of the square to the beat of the music.

  17. The crowd started to leave, and I frantically looked around for a sane face. I had so many questions, but all of the faces I saw seemed intent on following the dancing savages. Then I saw him, a PALLID, white face amongst all the brown. He was as civilized a face as I was going to find in this reservation, so I made my way towards him. “Excuse me!” I yelled. He turned and, once affirming that it was he that I had called for, he smiled welcomingly. “I’m sorry to bother you,” I told him, “But I simply must ask, what is the meaning of this?” as I swept my arm across the view of the now bloodied square. “I ought to have been there,” the young man said remorsefully. “Why wouldn’t they let me be the sacrifice?” I was horrified by the man’s words, and quickly asked if he truly meant what he said. He explained to me that his sacrifice would be “for the sake of the pueblo – to make the rain come and the corn grow. And to please Pookong and Jesus. And then to show that I can bear pain without crying out.” I asked him who this Pookong and Jesus were, but his explanation was that of a mad man’s, and I’m afraid it made no sense to me. His response was sadly ignorant to the working of life, saying that these people, those who’s images had risen in the square, were responsible for the rain and an array of other things. It did make me long to be back home, among people who know what I know, because this poor creature’s ignorance was truly heartbreaking. It really is savage, how they spill the blood of their own kind in such a ridiculous endeavor. Jesus and Pookong must be awfully bad to want people to do such things for them.
Now that I’m writing, several hours after the event, I find that the most haunting part of this experience was the young boy’s silence as he received his lashings. Why would he not call for help? And if John, the white savage I spoke to, is correct, the boy also volunteered for such torture. It is blatant madness, but I feel there is something else to it, although I can’t put a name to it right now. The silence made me fear that boy. I believe I would be scared still if I met him. He gained a certain power during that ceremony, and though I am unable to say how exactly he acquired this power, I know that a man who can endure something like that while remaining so STOIC, that is a man that I would not want to confront. It makes me question my own security. If people like that live, am I really safe? Because, if that boy ever really wanted something, his display today makes me doubt that there is anything that could truly stop him from reaching that goal, whether it be a wicked or virtuous one. But listen to me, only here a few days and already the savages have gotten to my head. There is nothing to worry about with the World State in charge. Stability! One of the three pillars of our society. I should know better than to feel threatened by such a person…still, it’s nice to know that when I go home, people like him will be left far away.

  18. Fellow classmates!
It is with great honor that I tell you of my observations in Malpais, New Mexico. While it is much different than life in the North America World State, it is fascinating to learn about and even be a part of it. First of all, I have noticed that women are very territorial of their men. They do not all belong to each other as we all do back in civilization. My ford it is crazy to see! Not only this but it isn’t out of the ordinary to see women who are, for lack of a better term, fat and even somewhat ECCENTRIC looking. Oh and their scent is PUTRID. Lenina, an Alpha I met from London is appalled by gruesomeness of these women. Her friend Bernard though, also from London is less taken aback, Lenina says it has something to do with too much alcohol in his system when he was being developed.
There are a few specific people I met here that I wanted to report on though. I think you’ll find this as interesting as I did. I met Linda, who came from where Lenina and Bernard are from, believe it or not! She became pregnant, with her son John and was forced to live here after being found in the mountains, injured and pregnant. Talk about a twist of fate! Linda has had an affair with a man named Pope, her son John dislikes him, it is easy to tell, but I cannot seem to fathom why. I mean everybody should belong to everybody, yet it causes so much controversy and emotional problems that I am astonished to see happening. Where I am from Linda would not be ridiculed and beat by the village women for abiding by the standard of living; (everybody belongs to everybody) and John would not even exist!
The idea of motherhood is such an unacceptable idea it makes me PALLID to think of, yet here it is everywhere. I have even seen babies suckling on their mother’s breast, as if it were no big deal. (I might add that the queer one, Bernard, saw this as a beautiful thing, quite out of the ordinary if you ask me). Linda has come to accept the fact that she is a mother whether it is a FAƇADE or not, I am not sure. But she has resentment towards John, although, it is hardly his fault. He recalled a story with me, a very personal experience, yet a perfect example of the resentment Linda feels towards John. “’Linda’. He cried out. ‘Oh mother don’t’ ‘I’m not your mother, I won’t be your mother’” was basically how it went, in the words of John, the savage.
John has had quite a trouble here. He can read unlike the rest of the boys in this village, and his emotions are intimate, it’s peculiar and astounding all at the same time. He is neglected from tribal activities, such as the traditional ceremony to becoming a man. The other boys see him as ABJECT. What fascinates me about John though, is he still performed the ceremony, only by himself. Some sort of self or reassuring I’m sure. It is strange he had to do this to feel like a man. I find it strange because it is as if he CONDITIONED himself!
As each day progresses I see something so different from life at the World state.. After seeing this lifestyle I question my stance. I came here as an ORTHADOX alpha, but, please Ford, forgive me for saying this, I’m not sure if this routine way of life is for me. Could I be becoming unorthodox? The spontaneity and individuality is such an attractive quality the savages are so lucky to have and be accustomed to, it makes me wonder…

    Always belonging to everyone,

  19. In the past week I have traveled to the Reservation, in Malpais New Mexico and I have returned with a new perspective and an ABJECTIVE one at that. On the reservation the things that they do for such simple things as water are HERETICAL to anything that we would ever do here in the North American World State. The Indian people who live on the reservation make a sacrifice to their version of the Greater being. During this horrifying ritual the people of the reservation chanted and danced much like we do at our solidarity services. After this ritual had ended I noticed a young blonde boy in the crowed who I later found out to be named John after a couple from the European World State, Lenina and Bernard, pulled him aside and talked to him. I joined in on the conversation as I was very much interested in just how he came to look so different. John explained that his mother, Linda, was from “the Other Place” which she later informed us was the European World State, and his father was a man named Tomakin also from the European World state. The young man introduced use to his mother, a word which ECCENTRIC to me, when Linda saw our little group for the very first time she exclaimed “if you knew how glad after all these years! A civilized face.” You could tell that she was ESTRANGED from the World State and not very pleased about it either. She told us tales of how her CONDITIONING became an issue because on the reservation the it was not acceptable to sleep with multiple partners and each time she gave a man a LECHEROUS time she was beaten by their women. I have learned many things from visiting the reservation but each lesson as haunting as the last, the way of life on the reservation just isn’t the right way of life and quite honestly it doesn’t make sense to me.

It was the queerest thing I have ever seen and I don’t think I have ever been so physically PALLID for so long. Although their beliefs were so much different than the ones I’ve been programmed to learn, I could not look away from their rituals. After staying in one of the rest resorts from the World State for a day, I decided that in order to best complete my training, I should try living with the savages in their own “homes.” (I’ve even prohibited soma from my diet so that I can fully observe the savage subjects; please do not tell the D.H.C., this was for scientific research only!)
I’ve learned that instead of throwing away ripped clothes they just mend it with a needle like an Epsilon would to at the Clothing and Fabric Making Engineer Room. Also, when I stayed with the VIVAPOROUS Linda at her hut, she was very glad that her son, John, did not participate in the sacrifice today. John even said, “I ought to have been there… I’d have gone round ten times- twelve, fifteen… They could have had twice as much blood from me.” Why would someone want to bleed for anyone else, isn’t sleeping with them much more rewarding? John said it had something to do with “souls” PREDESTINATION, but I wasn’t convinced yet.
During the beginning of the day, when the villagers collected the snakes to put in a ritual chest, I had the chance to explore the vacant underground. I would not advise this to anyone else. My curiosity outweighed my fear and I almost died; they found me snooping about and almost put a beating on me if I hadn’t been white (from the Other Place). I could not look away from the PUTRID things they keep down there and once they saw my growing interest they reluctantly explained what their SEPTIC instruments were for with pride. I must not express what I’ve found, for I believe in their protection of privacy. This may be a very unorthodox thing to say but I fear that I will be resigning my intern position as an Alpha Plus junior scientist in the near future. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ll want to go back to the Other Place now… I have so many questions that I know will never be answered if I return. For some reason, Malpais gives me a feeling for the first time in my life, that is actually my own.

Malpais, New Mexico is an ABJECT and uncivilized world but yet it intrigued me. It is bizarre how they live their lives. No soma, no extra hormones. I don’t understand how they can behave in such a chaotic fashion. The people at the World State would think it was UNORTHODOX and barbaric. The reservation felt dry and cramped but my eyes were open and absorbing everything that passed me. People were hardly dressed, walking around with very little clothes. The men had white lines painted on their bare chests; their hair braided down their backs and gliding over the stone necklaces they wore. The jewelry they wore chimed as they moved about, a peculiar rattling, musical sound. There were two others that were from London that I had met. Lenina and Bernard. Lenina seemed CALLOW but curious. She kept saying “Queer. Very queer.” Her complaining bothered me, got underneath my skin. Bernard was able to shake off her incessant comments. We observed the lifestyle, taking in all of their odd ways. There was one time when there was a large crowd that gathered to watch a boy being whipped mercilessly, blood trickling down him. In the background there was the sound of a flustered drum beating as the end of the beating and bleeding occurred. The stress of watching someone being treated as if they were useless made me crave my soma. I could start feeling the withdrawal in the pit of my stomach.

Later on Bernard had told me that there was another young man that said he wished he could have been the one getting whipped and used as sacrifice. “Why wouldn’t they let me be the sacrifice?” he had said. I was confused by how STOIC they acted, or were. Is this how life outside of the World State, outside of SOLITUDE is supposed to be like? Is it us or them who are HERETICAL?

Hello my name is Nevilla, I was very nervous as we approached the ship-like structure but being with this couple, Bernard and Lenina, made me feel a little better. We stepped out and climbed the mesa but the smell of the air seemed to be getting worse with increasing elevation, it was disgusting. At the top, we were met with brown naked bodies painted with white lines and their hair braided, and a huge feather diadems around their heads. At a distance there was a man holding a moving rope, but as we approached him, the rope turned into a snake, AHh!
We saw this very old man going down a terrace and I instantly thought and wished I could age like that; Lenina on the other hand was horrified while Bernard seemed stoic. Moving through the crowd I lost Lenina and Bernard. I tried to trace them down the narrow paths of the reservation but I ended up seeing things Inever thought I would see: a dead dog lying, a woman with goitre looking for lice in a small girl. I got distracted when the drums stopped beating. I went to see what was going on and as I got closer I saw a naked man nailed to a cross. Then a boy stepped out from the crowd, and a man with a whip emerged. There were many people blocking my view but every now and then someone screamed.
When I finally pushed my way through the crowd I saw Lenina and Bernard. Lenina was covering her eyes to avoid watching the queer event. Bernard was talking to this boy John who we had recently met. “What are chemicals? How do you make them? Where do they come from?”, he seemed to have endless list of questions as he was interested to know more about the world state that his mother had told him about it. His mother Linda was in a horrific state that if the world controllers were to see her, I think they would leave her for the dead.
Although this place is nothing but queer, it is very similar to world state in that they have a celebration like Ford’s day. Even though the process of increasing population is completely opposite from the world state, I admire it.

  23. Classmates,
Being here in Malpais, New Mexico gives me such an awkward, ECCENTRIC feeling that I cannot seem to put my finger on. I feel as if there is no life in those who are here, everyone’s faces seem so PALID and STOIC, by their surroundings which has certainly given me queasy feelings. It makes me wish I had brought more soma, to help me calm down and stop getting so worked up. I ran into some new friends today, Linda, John, Pope, Mitsima, and Bernard and Lenina. They’re from London, and told me how difficult it is to be accepted into this reservation, and that they too had some troubles accepting me regardless of our alikeness.
Lenina and I got talking about her past, and I realized how easy their life appeared to be. They used soma regularly, and when feeling stressed would hook up with others; no strings attached. It was shocking how clam she was about her promiscuity and said that she had gotten beaten up for sleeping with other’s men. For some reason I couldn’t get over it. Then I focused on Linda. She was extremely odd looking, and I caught myself staring once or twice. John and I began talking, and I realized that he was one of few who was able to grow up outside of the World State. We got talking, and he was full of such knowledge of Shakespeare and human life that I was intrigued with what he was saying. After I had met my new friends, they took me on a tour of the reservation. It had a PUTRID smell that made me question how these people could live in such a place. We were stopped when reaching a ceremony of other civilians in a circle singing and dancing. I felt the need to join in. With so many diverse people, I felt that I was in a state of SOLITUDE and needed to get back. I took a gram of soma and felt at ease. I wish I had one of you to keep me company, and to keep my brain in check.
The reservation is quite the place to be. There is no leader, or controller. Everyone takes a gram before getting upset and “every one works for everyone else.” I have not been able to adapt to this unorthodoxy environment, but I feel as if it should be an adventure. I wish you all were here, and the best of wishes.
    Love always,
    Olivia

I find myself questioning everything around me as I walk about Malpais, New Mexico. My mad surroundings not only raise question to the eye but also to the mind of oneself. The savages of Malpais go about their HERETICAL ways so regularly it makes me question for a moment whether my world is mistaken in our traditions but as I take a second look the World State reminds how ECCENTRIC their lives really are. As I continue to walk about the reservation every face I see ESTRANGES me to feel minority but as I continue on I see two faces with the same horrified FASCADE as mine. I immediately find comfort in their civil voices and there similar story to mine. Their names were Bernard and Lenina and apparently found similar curiosity in the rituals of the savages to mine. We engaged in small talk for a few minutes until being interrupted by the loud banging of their drum ceremony. This seemed like a good time to slip away from the two and continue my own observations considering Lenina had gone into a trance whispering “orgy-porgy”. As persisted on I found more strange rituals as I stumbled upon a most queer ceremony where a boy no older than I was whipped for good fun it seems. It was like nothing I had ever seen back home the way the blood dripped off his STOIC body. I stood there perplexed as the ceremony unfolded with snakes, wolves, and eagles making question whether this was a dream. Without my knowing I soon become the only one left in the village square until a tap on the back woke me up from my conciseness with a tap on the back. As I turned around I was surprised to find a white man in Indian attire staring back at me and even more surprised to hear his perfect English. From there on he explained everything to me from there so called “sacrificial honorable whipping” to why in fords name he was here. Apparently he was born from a VIVIPAROUS mother he called Linda which is why he was forced to live in this ABJECT place. It seems though that he was even more interested in the place I hauled from than my curiosity for his home. For the rest of the day we traded question for answer finding out I little bit more about each other and the places we called home.

    Salutations fellow students,

Even as I write this down I still cannot believe that human beings, if they are even deserving of that description, could live under such PUTRID conditions. I have spent the past several days in the Malpais a savage reserve in New Mexico North America; during my time a have witnessed atrocities that are so ABJECT that the civilized mind could not comprehend them. The first thing that struck me as I entered the reserve was the filth, I was introduced to people that thrived in squallier. I can say without equivocation that the reserve was the least ASEPTIC place I have ever seen; the people reek of something they call alcohol (which seems to have some of the affects of soma but with horrid after affects) they barley clean themselves and never ware scents like civilized people. The way the people of this disgusting place was even more disturbing then the dirt, they keep going on and on about someone named Jesus, it’s ridiculous they talk of him as if he was as important as our Ford. The savages toil in the mud to make their living growing food tending and altering them, as if they were humans in a bottle. I even met one of these ECCENTRIC savages and if you can believe it he was making things out of mud, his name was Mitsima and he was teaching a young man named john. he told me he was working with “clay” I didn’t really want to know anything about this dirty practice but he was INDEFATIBABLE in his efforts to teach me. Mitsima explained the process “first of all” he told me “we make a little moon”… he told me that working clay into pots (yes using dirty to hold water. How awful!) was an ancient technique. I told him tat civilized people have far more efficient ways to make pots and far better things to do then play in the mud, he got offended when I told him this and we had very little contact for the rest of my journey. I wish I could tell you that this was the worst thing I saw in the reserve but, I saw something that was even more detestable them playing in filth. A strange ceremony was performed while I was visiting a young man and young women were “married” which is some kind of a promise they make to if you can believe it: only have sex with each other. Yes my friends they actually choose to sleep with only one person the vulgarity of it, the selfishness, I told them that the practice was absurd and that “everyone belongs to everyone else”. If this practice of what they call “monogamy” was not bad enough they actually have sexual intercourse to make babies, I feel like a deviant just writing this down. Another ritual that appalled me was the act of self-inflicted pain to honor something called called God, young men were being wiped in front of a crowd when I asked the savage named john if he was happy it wasn’t him he actually expressed disappointment in not being chosen to be wiped. He asked me what we did to honor our God, I told him we don’t have silly god, we honored Our ford at orgy-porgy meetings feeling him through other people. The savage heard my description of orgy porgy he called me LECHEROUS and told me to go away and never speak to him. These savages are most rude, and live the PALLID life. I would suggest against anyone else from visiting these “people” they have nothing good to teach us and refuse to accept civilized practice I saposse that is why we keep the locked away in the reserve.
